The main two reasons that the sip drips are that there’s ablockage downstream of the peristaltic (DCM) pump, or more often that the blackperistaltic tubing is worn/stretched so that the pump rollers don’t pinch offthe lumen. If the (orange) waste tubing is blocked downstream of the pump, thenyou’ll get other problems like sample slow down while running (as the wastebacks up and equilibriates to the sample pressure), and the peristaltic pumpwill be switched off after a few seconds of free running (there’s a pressuresensor that turns it off when it detects too high a back pressure). Less often the microswitch on the back of thesample support arm may be broken (in which case you won’t hear the peristalticpump grinding away). On older systems the pinch rollers and their bearings canwear, giving similar symptoms to worn or stretched tubing. The first thing I’d do is to a check that the pump is rollingwhen the arm is open, then try replacing the tubing that goes through the pump(replacing at the same time the tee connector that couples the output side tothe orange waste tubing). – drop me aline if you’d like a run through on changing this tubing – don’t stretch thetubing too tight, or the walls thin and the rollers can’t squeeze them down toocclude the lumen. If these two steps leave you with a dripping sip, then I’dinvestigate the rollers – a temporary fix can be done by shimming a small coinor washer between the top of the roller cage and the back plate of the head, tippingit forward slightly and narrowing the gap to the rollers, if this works thenyou can leave it as is for a while, or order up a new pump head. If it appears that you have a blockage in the waste line trysyringing it out, also check all of the barb connectors and anyquick-disconnects in line (especially the one that connects to the tank).
